i've been scratching my head about it for weeks over this and just solved the issue today - it might not work for everyone experiencing this error, but i'm posting it here in case it does/for future reference.

things i tried that didn't work (but might help you):

updating/restarting firefox
updating/restarting windows (or your operating system of choice)
manually updating the video drivers
deleting the DNS cache
deleting the browser cache
running Firefox in troubleshooting mode (no extensions or add-ons) to make sure it wasn't some extension that broke in an update

what actually worked for me:

go to about:config (open a new tab and use that in place of the URL)
look up "media.mediasource.enabled"
if it's set to "false", set it back to "true" by double-clicking it

i had this configuration set to false in order to get videos to buffer completely instead of just loading a couple minutes at a time and then stopping, but unfortunately this does not seem to play well with most streaming sites/servers. pretty sure it worked well before, but an update must have broken it.

yeah, for those who missed some of what went down:

several AIs have been trained datasets containing fanfiction hosted on ao3 through data scraping (post explaining some of this here, but this conclusion is easily reached through Common Crawl and other crawler datasets being used to train AIs such as ChatGPT and SudoWrites, which already contained scraped ao3 data)

AI-generated fics are being currently posted on ao3 in increasingly bigger numbers

none of this is (or was) against the terms of service of ao3

fans kept pushing ao3/otw to make an official statement of their position on the issue, to no avail

on 06/05/2023, otw made a post quoting an interview with the current otw legal chair (betsy rosenblatt) being very in favour of AI data scraping, including on sites like ao3 (thank you wayback machine for the receipts - original post | the interview in question, which is... oof.)

people lashed back against it

post was edited with no inkling of what was deleted. the first time i read it i didn't even notice they said it had been edited.

after a few days, ao3/otw FINALLY made an official statement in regards to their stance on AI content and scraping

and the statement is...... not very encouraging. to say the least.

there's not much i can say in regards to the data scrapping, really. it's as good as can be expected.

but the fucking AI-generated works policies.

"If fans are using AI to generate fanworks, then our current position is that this is also a type of work that is within our mandate to preserve."

i CANNOT overstate how much machine-made works made from stolen fanworks are NOT fanworks in the slightest. just thinking of elaborating further on this makes me want to throw my computer out of the window and never write again.

and add to that this particular gem from an earlier ao3/otw post:

"In April, Legal Chair Betsy Rosenblatt participated in the first of the U.S. Copyright Office listening sessions on artificial intelligence and copyright law. This listening session was a great opportunity to provide information, help frame U.S. lawmakers’ questions about future policy decisions, and learn about technology and practice so that the OTW can make its own policy decisions about how to approach questions about AI. Legal will be doing more in this area in the coming months."

well, given her other statements, i'm fairly reticent about reading whatever she might have said (video here but no transcript yet, so i'm not touching it until there's text). i must once again reiterate that she's the legal chair of the otw.

for fuck's sake, ao3.

Google supposedly will begin with accounts that have no content for now and will slowly roll out those changes, but fuck knows how long that will last. they've listed products like YouTube on content that will be affected, and i can't even begin to imagine how barren it will be once they get past this initial stage.

Imgur is removing any and all NSFW content - porn-y and educational with no differentiation - as well as anonymously posted content, which only affects a ridiculous amount of the internet before image hosting on the sites/forums themselves became A Thing

SO YULETIDE REVEAL IS FINALLY HERE AND AT LAST I CAN PROMO MY CHARLOTTE/FACILIER 13K TINY BEHEMOTH OF A GIFT FIC. IT'S HERE. IT'S A THING. PLEASE ENJOY IT.

this piece was written for LunaFanWork! warning for like.... dark themes, background necromancy, the usual stuff for those who know me, and then some extra as requested. the tags are important on this one, folks. i mean it.

general thoughts on the challenge itself: it was a bit of a puzzle to put together, because like 80% of the yuletide letter were kinks that definitely were not my kinks, and for the bits i liked and/or could stomach i had to turn it this way and that to find a way to make it work. i'm actually fairly pleased with how it turned out! ~~(even though i had to rewrite a few bits last minute because of confusing/conflicting prompts and DNWs, special shoutout to the mods for giving me an extra day!)~~ it's definitely not the lottie i'd have written if the request did not ask specifically for it, though.

also, my mental english voice has been speaking in a southern accent since december because of this fic, so that's been fun.

this is the official launch of my personal psoh yuletide party! feel free to send me prompts between now and december (and after that too, though they won’t be added to the collection) and i'll make an extra effort to write them out.

for those unaware, psoh wasn’t a nominated fandom for yuletide this year, which is one of those rare occasions when we actually get new content. to make up for this, i'll (presumably) be writing several extra fics between now and the end of yuletide so that the psoh fans who looks forward to yuletide have at least something new to enjoy. feel free to join me in writing them if you'd like!

i've already mentioned here how sad it makes me that psoh wasn't a nominated fandom for this year's yuletide. i know several fans (old and new and with myself very much included) really look forward to this time of the year to get new fics for a long-dead fandom.

that is not going to happen this year, unfortunately.

what i'm thinking is to maybe put in the effort and write several new fics for psoh myself on this time frame. it's not the same thing at ALL, and my writing is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but gods, it's surely better than nothing. and i know not a lot of people on here are still into psoh, much less ones i've managed to friend, but if anyone has any prompts they desperately wish to see for a psoh short fic then send them my way and i'll try to see what i can do.

just a word of warning: this is NO guarantee i'll actually get any writing done. work is hell and hell is work, and muses are very fickle things, and i have my own official yuletide fic to work on once they send out assignments! i just feel terrible and Very Bad Indeed that there will probably be no new fics otherwise. ~~just please don't ask me to write sofu i hate him~~

i'm so heartbroken psoh wasn't nominated this year. i never remember on time to nominate it myself ~~or there would be a lot more obscure fandoms on the listings~~ but psoh has been consistently listed on the tag set every year for as long as i remember and i'm sad to see it go.

laziness speaking on top of love and nostalgia, but it's also That One Fandom i always volunteer to write for, if only because i know the characters so well that they're fairly easy to write in comparison to other fandoms :'D

that and i always get a mighty headache trying to figure out the fandoms to volunteer for while juggling all of my Very Specific parameters:

what am i willing to write for this fandom/characters? anything? or is there a specific sort of thing that is likely to be asked that i would absolutely hate to do?
how well do i know this world and these characters? is it one of the fandoms i was so obsessed with for so long that i'm confident in writing for those worlds (harry potter is not on yuletide but that's an extensive world i know a little too well, w.i.t.c.h. comics are another one, at least until they took a turn for the terrible, etc) or is it something i will be terribly afraid of making mistakes and will have to research literally every little thing in order not to get too anxious about it (slice of life anime full of japanese cultural references, canon in historical eras, characters in the military or other specific careers, extensive sprawling canon, etc)? do i remember the source material well enough to write for it even though it's something i used to love?
how likely is it that i'll be asked for something entirely out of character that would make me scream and cry to actually write?
are the prevalent tropes for that fandom something i vibe with at all?
do i have any ideas to fall back on for that fandom/characters if the yuletide letter doesn't specify anything?
how easy will it be for me to get inspired and write something for this?

it's a bit of a gamble every year, not gonna lie. i already changed my sign-up like three times on the past day or so because i kept changing my mind about certain fandoms and my motivation to write for them. i finally did decide to include his dark materials in one of my fandoms even though i haven't read it in a full decade, so i guess i just saddled myself with not one, not two, but three books to reread if i'm assigned to write for it: i'm not sure if i'll have the head for it, but i'm also salivating at the characters/ship i picked for HDM so.

my love for rarepairs wins once more, i guess.

oh man, this is heartbreaking.

new fans might not even have heard of yahoo groups, but yahoo has just announced they'll be deleting all the content hosted on there on december 14. and for new fandoms it's fine, it's fine, but it's a huge loss for early 00's fandoms like petshop of horrors, which is small as it is and only getting smaller with the constant purges and closing sites taking away so much of its content. in YG, namedly this one, i've found far too many fics that are no longer surviving anywhere else, and now those, too, are going down.

i've saved as many as i can, and i will try to download the rest of the content on the PSoH groups i'm on as soon as i have the time, but i can't in good conscience straight-up upload those fics anywhere for public eyes to see when they're not mine. i'm more than happy to share lost fics with anyone who asks, but i'm not foolish enough to think i'll be around forever, and even then i'm only one person. i already had to dig pretty hard to find as many fics as i did, and it's heartbreaking to think of the fans that will come after me only to find less and less fics with time, only knowing of their existence through recs leading to dead links or none at all.

there isn't much i can do about it, aside from contacting the groups' mods and backing up what i can, myself. and that, i think, might be the worst of it all.
