Policies on derived works

Figured I should detail it somewhere since the AO3 profile space doesn't allow enough characters for this, so:

(Last edited on 11-07-2024)

General rule: everything must link back to me with proper credit. I mean it. No credit, no dice. Anything that will have you profiting from it is also a no-no. Learn your fandom history, people!

New!!!! General rule:
No permissions apply to any AI-based or AI-assisted works. Do not use AI to do anything with my works or to create anything inspired by my works. NEVER enter my writing into any AI for any purpose whatsoever, including your own personal use.

Reposting and copy-pasting the fics directly to other sites:
Hard no.

Using long blocks of sequencial text copied from my fic: Hard no.

Reutilizing my fic while making minor changes/changing the names of the characters: Hell no.

Using my fic for commercial uses in any way, including hosting on paid websites, selling fan-bindings or readings of it, etc: Hell no.

Bookbinding my fics for PERSONAL use only or gifting to a friend: omg PLEASE show me if you do. general rules still apply.

Fanart, fanvids, cosplay, other non-text media that doesn't directly utilize my words: feel free to do whatever, as long as the general rule still applies.

Citations, discussions, recs, presentations, and other text-based media that might use SMALL but several direct quotations of my work
: same as above.

Fanfiction inspired by my own: feel free, but please link back to mine and credit properly. AO3 has a very handy feature for this that will spare you from having to manually add the link and everything. On FFN and similar sites that don't allow a link in the work itself, please refer my handle and the fic title in the description/author's note at the very least.

Podfics, translations, and other derived works that DIRECTLY utilize a large body of my words (not just a sentence or two):
If on AO3, just do the same as in the paragraph above, preferably while adding me as a co-author. I'm willing to create accounts on sites I'm not on if they have similar setups to AO3. Otherwise, make sure to credit and link me, and state directly at the beginning of the work this exact sentence: "This work was posted with the consent of the original author, howlingmoonrise, and you can find the original on AO3" alongside the original title and a link to the original fic, if the website allows. I would like to be able to distinguish people who cared to check whether I had a blanket permission or not, since I've had some bad experiences before.

Regarding podfics, please be aware that I won't be able to listen to them and therefore cannot comment on them properly, but I'll be very flattered you picked my fics to read out anyway!

If these terms sound agreeable to you, I'll be delighted to see what you come up with! Please do link me to your work if you post anything, I'd be more than happy to share it for others to see! If you have questions or concerns about these rules, however, please feel free to contact me here, on tumblr, or even directly on a comment in the work you were inspired by, and we can talk it out. If you don't agree at all with this, then I'm happy that you liked my fics to the point of wanting to base something on them, but I cannot give you my go-ahead. Thank you for staying this far!
