If the D in this series is going to be such a nonentity, I'd almost rather have it turn out to be some totally-unrelated member of the species. Then his personality can build up slowly over time, and it'll be a surprising journey of discovery, instead of "we know where this is going, hurry up and get to the part where he's interesting."
